Last week was Amsterdam International Fashion Week again. Blogs and articles show us the new trends, the front rows and some beautiful catwalk shots. But the photos I always like most are the street style photos. Photos of people, randomly captured on film outside, in a relaxed and almost accidental way (I bet that is not true in all cases). The background? A park, a busy street or a concrete building. These photos have a great city feel!
Almost everyone does is these days (The Sartorialist, fashion bloggers, magazines like Elle and Grazia). But my favourite photographer of street style is Bill Cunningham, one of the very first. Cunningham already started his ‘printed blog’ in The New York Times in 1978, and now (at age of 82!) still makes his On the Street column, nowadays online. He always combines beautiful city photos with shots of fashionistas and sharp descriptions of trends.
This year a movie by Richard Press will honour Cunningham. I’ll definitely watch Bill Cunningham New York, because I am curious to see more of the man that makes real city portraits through these photos of people in the streets. The trailer for the movie by Richard Press can be checked out here. Best detail of the trailer: the lovely fact that mister Cunningham drives his bike around New York. Love that man!
